Description

Star clusters M 38, NGC 1907, and Czernik 21. Along with emission nebula LBN 794 in the constellation Auriga.

M 38 has been taking up space on my target list for years because the majority of images I see of it show little to nothing in the background. Coming into at the start of November the moon was bright and I was looking for a somewhat soft target that I could do from my bright home sky before I packed up the ED127 and sold it. Star clusters, while usually kinda boring, make great full moon targets so M38 it is. 

Given most of the images I've seen of this cluster online I was quite surprised to fine 2 smaller clusters and a very large hydrogen cloud occupying the same space. OK, maybe this won't be such a boring image after all. After 4 nights of collecting HA data I was satisfied with the SNR so I did some RGB stars and they just felt dull. Refractor stars often have that effect on me. Fortunately, I have a Newtonian that with an open window of time so I directed it to the field and grabbed the star data. I'm glad I did too. Not only to the diffraction spikes add some much needed flare to the field but I just can't get star color and glow like this in my bright suburban sky.
